To speak about ‘in birdsongs’ requires a reference point to what came before, ‘Bad Dreams ‘97’, as this album, by design, was always going to be the exact opposite of what that album was. Where ‘Bad Dreams ‘97’ was an album about total loss and detatchment, ‘in birdsongs’ was really me finding joy & peace in creating music again.
‘in birdsongs’ began production in December 2019, and went through about eight variations of the nine songs I’m releasing today, some got taken out, some got put in the bin, I needed them to feel a certain way, not sonically, but they had to feel as if they wanted to be there in the same way I wanted them to be there, if that makes sense. I would spend days moving the tiny scraps of a snare or a harp around, until it felt like that was where it was meant to be all along. They felt alive like that, I guess.
The nine songs here are entirely made up of samples, not in the “splice sample pack” way, I mean each song is made up of tiny little fragments of youtube videos and found audio, it became an obsession at some point, watching countless videos with around 43 views looking for that perfect bit of dialogue or the prefect two notes I could warp, pitchshift and mess around with until it became what I needed it to be. The only two songs with any instrumentation from people I know is the song “Closer as Love”, which I played guitar on, and “See Cammy Play”, which Cameron sent me a couple guitar and piano samples that I mangled together.
