about

All songs recorded from March - August 2020

Hi,

Been awhile since I’ve written one of these, this compilation’s proceeds go to the Scottish Association for Mental Health, similar to when we were a band and released ‘Birthdays’, I’ll be matching all donations from the 2nd to the 9th, if you donate the minimum (£3), I’ll donate £3, if you donate a hundred, I’ll put in a hundred.

I’ve never charged for my music, I’ve never really made any money of it, the most I’ve earned was from the live show me, Jamie, Adam and Jack put on in October last year. It’s a passion project, it would feel wrong to charge anything for my music, regardless of the amount of hours I put into it, I just like making music, I’d probably be doing this even if nobody was listening, regardless, I’ve found myself in the position of having way too many songs and not really being in the mood to release them as albums or singles, which isn’t to say these are B-sides or offcuts, I’ve made a lot of albums in the last year (thank you quarantine), and these are my favourites from all of them.

The songs are split into genres, so if you like the more accessible lo-fi hip hop stuff, it starts with that, and ends with the more experimental side of what I do, thought it’d be easier that way.

There is a joy in creation that can be both meditative and taxing, music is one of two things I’m constantly thinking about, which can create a somewhat insular atmosphere for me, which obviously isn’t the healthiest, but I’m still here, thanks in part to SAMH, who do extraordinary work for the mental health of thousands of people, there isn’t any shame in saying “I’m struggling”, especially after the dumpster fire this year has been. I’d be a hypocrite if I said it gets better, it can, but mostly it just carries on, and time can and will help soothe the wounds this year has left us with. As someone with a small platform, relatively tiny in the scope of things, I figured this was the way to put some good out into the world.

Yours,

Russ
